Decorative Bird
Cages
Decorative bird cages are not just
for the birds. However, if you do happen to own a bird you might as well keep
him in a nice home. Decorative bird cages are available in styles to suit any
taste and decor. And even if you dont have a bird they can lend an
attractive decorator touch to your home. They make great centerpieces, plant
holders and wall hangars.
There are antique bird cages,
vintage bird cages, large ones and small ones. They are available in many
materials such as wood, stainless steel, iron, steel and acrylic. If
youre going to keep a live bird in a cage you need to check with a vet or
bird expert about the best construction material for your particular type of
bird.
Some bird cages are strictly
decorative or ornamental, while others are meant to be functional. Do not
compromise your birds comfort or safety just for the sake of style. With
a little bit of research you can find a decorative bird cage that is also
functional and safe.
Since your bird is going to spend
most of its life in or on his cage the wire must be the proper thickness and
spacing. The dimensions of the cage must be suited to the particular bird also.
The cage must also be designed in such a way that it makes your bird feel at
home. Different types of birds need different sizes and types of cages.
For larger birds like African
grays, cockatoos, conures and Amazons, you will need a cage that is at least
twice as large as the maximum wingspan of the bird. The cage must also be deep
enough so that the birds tail does not touch the cage when he is standing
on his perch. Your bird needs enough room to exercise. His cage should be big
enough to allow several perches, toys, and other bird cage accessories. Buy the
largest cage that your budget and your room can accommodate.
Ideally your cage should have a
door in which the entire cage front swings open to make cleaning easier. A
smaller door incorporated within the front panel permits easy entry into the
cage without opening the whole cage. The top of the cage should have a play
area with a large perch or bar, food and water cups and a ladder or other toys.
Cages for larger birds should have a locking mechanism. Since birds are quite
smart, make sure the bird wont be able to figure out how to unlock
it.
Decorative bird cages are
available on line and at a number of retail stores. They come in a wide variety
of prices depending on their construction and size. We show you some of the
more popular models on the pages of this site. |
